Heavy Punishment for Coaches After Player Dies at Sea in Cape Town
Two French Under-18 rugby coaches face civil service sanctions and manslaughter charges after a player disappeared in the sea during a training camp near Cape Town, officials confirmed.
- On August 7, 2024, Mehdi Narjissi, 17-year-old Toulouse player, was swept out to sea during a recovery session at a French Under-18 team training camp near Cape Town, and his body has not been recovered.
- An investigating judge in Agen charged fitness coach Robin Ladauge and former manager Stephane Cambos with manslaughter earlier this year over the disappearance last year of Mehdi Narjissi.
- The Ministry of Sports ordered the loss of fitness coach Robin Ladauge's civil servant status and suspended former manager Stephane Cambos for two years, with one year suspended, following disciplinary proceedings.
- Jalil Narjissi, father of Mehdi Narjissi, said the sanctions were `the minimum`, called allowing teenagers to swim there a `crime`, and described the situation as `shameful` since Stephane Cambos retains his civil service status.
- Defence counsel announced an appeal and argued Robin Ladauge's dismissal was based `on a completely erroneous account`; lawyer Celine Lasek said Ladauge is `devastated` for Medhi's family and keeps them in his thoughts.
