Two days after the start of the fire, which ravaged more than 16,000 hectares in the department, the firefighters managed on Thursday, not without difficulty, to contain the flames. But on the spot, wine growers and residents are worried about potential recurrences.
This is the worst fire in at least 50 years in the French Mediterranean, according to a government database listing forest fires since 1973.
By Thursday afternoon, the flames had spread to 17,000 hectares in the Aude department. According to the local prefecture, 36 houses were damaged or destroyed, 40 vehicles burned.

The fire, which has travelled 17,000 hectares in three days, is still in progress but it is no longer gaining ground, announced the prefect of the Aude, Christian Pouget. At least 1,850 firefighters and 600 vehicles are still mobilized.
"The roads that have not been recognized do not attempt to return to your home without permission", warns the prefecture on X Thursday night.
