Device Checker not surveillance tool – NCC assures Nigerians

The platform lets users scan IMEI numbers to verify device approval status and help curb counterfeit and cloned phones, the commission said.

  • On Thursday, the Nigerian Communications Commission urged Nigerians to verify mobile devices before purchase to guard against counterfeit and non-compliant products circulating in the market.
  • The Zonal Controller said the initiative ensures all equipment connected to Nigerian networks meets established technical and regulatory standards as the nation's digital economy expands.
  • To simplify compliance, the NCC developed a Device Checker application allowing authorized stakeholders to scan International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers, while streamlining licensing for dealers in Kano State.
  • Clarifying privacy concerns, the Controller emphasized the Device Checker Platform is not a surveillance tool; "Its purpose is limited to device identification and regulatory compliance verification," the Controller added.
  • Consumers can check device status through the NCC portal using an IMEI number, or contact the NCC through its 315 consumer toll-free number for assistance and complaints.
