Lions President Declines Further Comment on Frank Ragnow Bonus Repayment
The team said it followed precedent and contract rules after Ragnow retired with $3 million in prorated signing bonus payments still remaining.
The Detroit Lions recouped a portion of former All-Pro center Frank Ragnow's signing bonus after he retired with two years remaining on his contract in June 2025.
Lions president Rod Wood defended the decision, citing team precedent dating back to Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson, arguing the Lions were returning money paid for uncompleted services.
Former Eagles center Jason Kelce and ex-teammate Alex Anzalone criticized the move, with Anzalone claiming the organization used a "contractural technicality" to justify the repayment demand despite Ragnow playing through severe injuries.
Such decisions have historically strained relationships between the franchise and its star players, and fans have expressed frustration given Ragnow's significant contributions to the team.
Detroit's offensive line struggled following Ragnow's exit, leaving a vacancy at left tackle entering 2026; the organization now holds draft options to address the resulting roster need.
