Preliminary Findings Released Into Essex Train Derailment
RAIB said the train ran 1.5 miles on sleepers and ballast after the derailment, but none of the 62 passengers were injured.
- On August 14, 2026, The Greater Anglia service traveling from Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street derailed around 2.1 miles south of Wickford station while traveling at approximately 77mph.
- Forward-Facing CCTV revealed a track misalignment at the derailment site, which the driver had reported as a kink in the track that rocked the driving cab as the train passed over it.
- None of the estimated 62 passengers were injured, and the train remained upright, though its rear carriage wheels ran on sleepers and ballast for about 1.5 miles, causing Significant damage to track, signalling, and overhead electrification equipment.
- GBR Anglia managing director Jamie Burles said the operator is fully cooperating with the RAIB, stating, "We are continuing to support the Rail Accident Investigation Branch following its announcement to investigate the incident at Wickford."
- The RAIB is examining track maintenance, hot weather mitigation measures, and management factors, with a spokesman confirming, "Our investigation is independent of any investigation by the railway industry or by the industry's regulator, the Office of Rail and Road.
