Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Ram Rahim, Rape-Murder Convict, Walks Out of Haryana Jail Again—This Time on a 40-Day Parole
SIRSA, HARYANA, AUG 5 – Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has received his 14th parole since 2017 while serving 20 years for rape and other convictions, raising questions about parole frequency, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh walked out of Sunaria Jail in Rohtak after being granted a 40-day parole, serving a 20-year sentence for rape.
- This marks the 14th temporary release for Ram Rahim since his 2017 conviction, after a 21-day furlough and a 30-day parole earlier this year.
- He will stay at his Sirsa-headquartered Dera for the 40-day period, with heavy police security escorting him, reflecting the sect's sizable following in districts including Sirsa, Fatehabad, Kurukshetra, Kaithal and Hisar.
- His release has sparked fresh criticism over the frequency and duration of his paroles and furloughs, with some past releases coinciding with polls in Punjab, Haryana and neighbouring states.
- In October 2024, the High Court mandated that parole applications follow the 2022 Haryana Good Conduct Prisoners Temporary Release Act without favouritism after Ram Rahim's October 1 last year parole ahead of the October 5 Haryana Assembly polls.
