Denmark Buys Four Sky Guardian Drones for Arctic Surveillance

DENMARK, JUL 22 – The acquisition includes drones, ground control stations, and training to strengthen Denmark's surveillance amid rising Arctic strategic importance, reinforcing NATO cooperation, officials said.

  • On July 23, 2025 in San Diego, the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization signed an agreement to procure four MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, including training, maintenance, and equipment.
  • Following Denmark’s 2021 Arctic Capability Package Agreement, the purchase stems from it for two drones, as rising Russian activity has heightened NATO’s Arctic defense focus.
  • The procurement includes three Certified Ground Control Stations, while the MQ-9B SkyGuardian offers pole-to-pole satellite control and de-icing capabilities for Arctic missions.
  • Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said `This is a crucial step in that direction`, as the procurement enhances both Danish and European security.
  • Ahead of deployment, Danish personnel will train in the United States, and initial deliveries are expected between 2028 and 2029.
