Democrats Deliver a Stunning Rout in Texas to Retake Power for the First Time in Decades
Democrats also won the lieutenant governor race as voters rejected Republicans on affordability and state policy, with turnout topping 7.7 million before Election Day.
- On Tuesday, Democratic State Rep. Vikki Goodwin unseated incumbent Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, becoming the first Democrat to win the office in 27 years amid a statewide surge of Democratic victories.
- Goodwin campaigned on public education, healthcare access, and affordability while targeting Patrick's widely unpopular push to ban hemp-derived THC products. Her platform centered on restoring collaborative governance.
- With about 53% of the estimated vote counted, Goodwin held about 57% compared to about 41% for Patrick. Libertarian Anthony Cristo captured 1.5% and Green Party candidate Kevin McCormick received 0.8%.
- The lieutenant governor presides over the Texas Senate and co-chairs the Legislative Budget Board, wielding significant influence over legislation. However, Goodwin inherits the office while the chamber retains a Republican majority.
- This victory ends Patrick's nearly two decades in public office and marks a significant political shift in Texas. The result breaks a Democratic losing streak in statewide elections that has persisted since the 1990s.
