Sen. Collins, Troy Jackson Focus on Collins' Record in Senate During Opening Statements
The candidates will clash over immigration, tariffs and affordability as four debates unfold in a race recent polls show is within the margin of error.
On Tuesday, Republican Senator Susan Collins and Democrat Troy Jackson faced off in their first debate, hosted by CBS News 13 in Portland, in Maine's contentious U.S. Senate race.
Both candidates hail from Aroostook County, a massive rural region. Jackson became the Democratic nominee in July after Graham Platner withdrew, forcing a condensed campaign timeline.
Jackson cited Collins' 96% voting record with President Donald Trump, emphasizing affordability crises from tariffs and fuel prices. Collins touted her nearly three decades on the Appropriations Committee and her work securing Maine funding.
The debate exposed clear differences as Jackson linked Collins to Trump's policies while the incumbent defended her Senate tenure. Collins faced particular scrutiny over her long record in Washington.
Tonight's debate is the first of four scheduled over the next 10 days. Decision Desk HQ gives Jackson a 53% chance of winning in a race virtually tied, making each appearance critical.
