Campaign Staff: Hong Paid Off $30K in Credit Card Debt with 'Personal Funds'
Court records show Capital One seeks nearly $30,000 from Wisconsin governor candidate Francesca Hong over credit-card debt.
On May 26, Capital One filed a lawsuit in Dane County Circuit Court against Wisconsin Democrat Francesca Hong, seeking repayment of nearly $30,000 in credit card debt.
Campaign Manager Becky Cooper attributed the debt to business expenses that rose during the pandemic, noting that Hong, like 80% of Americans, carries similar financial obligations.
Cooper said, "We will have a letter shortly confirming this debt is paid in full," and clarified that campaign funds were "absolutely not" used for payment.
Recent polls show Hong leading a crowded Democratic primary field, including a March Marquette Law School survey where she polled ahead of former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes.
An August 11 primary will determine the Democratic nominee, who will face Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany in the November 3 general election.
