More than 600 Calls Made to EPCOR Due to Flooding in Edmonton
EPCOR said it received more than 600 service calls as officials warned flooding and sewer backups could worsen if residents keep using water normally.
On Monday, Edmonton residents were asked to restrict non-essential water use as heavy rainfall pushed the city's stormwater system to capacity, with EPCOR receiving more than 600 calls for service.
An intense weather system dumped 104 millimetres of rain on the city over three days, exceeding typical monthly averages and overwhelming municipal drainage infrastructure across central Alberta.
In Tofield, located about 50 km southeast of Edmonton, heavy rain forced evacuations and damaged properties, while business owners at Tofield Packers reported rising water cut off access to their shop.
While the emergency water supply alert for Edmonton was lifted on Monday, the city remains tied with 1965 for the second-wettest June on record as infrastructure stabilizes.
Environment Canada warns that additional rain forecast for later this week may further impact the region, as June precipitation has already surpassed 189 mm, the highest total in over 60 years.
