Deezer Says 44% of New Music Uploads Are AI-Generated, Most Streams Are Fraudulent
Deezer said its AI detection tools flagged 75,000 new uploads a day and it will stop storing high-resolution versions of those tracks.
- Deezer reported 44% of new music uploads are now AI-generated, a sharp rise from 34% at the end of last year, equating to roughly 75,000 daily uploads on the French platform.
- AI-Generated tracks are often used to mimic popular artists and generate profit through fraudulent streams; Deezer previously detected up to 85% of streams were fraudulent when it made its AI-detection tools public.
- Since January, the platform has offered its own AI-detection tool to flag music that is completely AI-generated, while Deezer will stop storing hi-res versions of these tracks to combat payment dilution.
- CEO Alexis Lanternier urged rival platforms to adopt similar measures, stating, "Since January, we have made our detection technology available for licensing," and aims to increase trust and transparency with subscribers.
- While Spotify recently rolled out an artist review system, Apple Music is tipped to introduce Transparency Tags to identify AI-assisted content, as services like Bandcamp and Qobuz face growing pressure to address AI-generated music.
