Cameroon Beats Malawi 3-0 to Win Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for the First Time
Marie Ngah scored twice as Cameroon beat Malawi 3-0, becoming the tournament’s fourth different champion since 1998.
On Sunday, Cameroon claimed their first Women's Africa Cup of Nations title, defeating debutants Malawi 3-0 in the final. The victory marks a historic achievement after the side lost three previous finals.
Ranked 32nd on the African continent, Malawi entered the championship as a surprise package making their debut. The team engineered a fairytale run to reach the final against experienced Cameroon.
Marie Ngah gave Cameroon the lead after 20 minutes, reacting quickly to a loose ball in the box. She scored again in added time as Naomi Eto added a second to secure dominance at halftime.
Cameroon becomes the fourth different winner of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations since 1998. Nigeria holds a record 10 titles, while Equatorial Guinea and South Africa have also claimed the championship.
Both finalists have secured places at the Women's World Cup in Brazil next year, joined by semi-finalists Morocco and Algeria. The four African nations will represent the continent at the global tournament.
