Death toll from Vietnam floods, landslides climbs to 90
Central and south-central Vietnam suffered severe floods and landslides killing 90, with 12 missing, damaging over 186,000 homes, officials said.
- Wednesday, torrential rains unleashed flash floods and landslides on Sumatra island, killing at least 10 and leaving six missing, the National Police said.
- Heavy seasonal rain over the past week caused rivers to burst their banks, sending mud, rocks and trees into villages in Indonesia, an archipelago of 17,000 islands where seasonal monsoon rains from October to March frequently cause flooding and landslides.
- Authorities reported extensive destruction including a destroyed bridge in Mandailing Natal, 470 houses submerged, and nearly 2,000 houses and buildings flooded in Central Tapanuli.
- Rescue teams struggled to reach affected areas in six regencies of North Sumatra, and by Wednesday had recovered at least five bodies and three injured in Sibolga while searching for four missing villagers.
- Sibolga police chief Eddy Inganta said emergency shelters were set up and residents urged to evacuate as six landslides flattened 17 houses and a café, with social media footage showing flooding on Tuesday.
