Deadly Car Explosion Strikes Near New Delhi's Red Fort
- On Monday, a car exploded near Gate Number 1 of the Red Fort metro station in New Delhi, killing at least eight people and injuring several others.
- Delhi Police said the cause remains unclear and investigations have begun as Satish Golcha, Delhi Police Commissioner, reported, `There was a blast around 6.52 pm in a slow moving vehicle near Red Fort. There were passengers inside the vehicle.`
- Seven fire tenders and firefighters doused flames by 7.29 pm after six cars and three autorickshaws caught fire; fifteen injured were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital.
- Authorities placed New Delhi on high alert as Union Home Minister Amit Shah was regularly briefed and the National Investigation Agency and National Security Guard reached the site, while Mumbai Police tightened security.
- Traffic around the Red Fort, Old Delhi and Chandni Chowk was diverted and commuters advised to avoid routes amid recent recoveries of around 360 kg of suspected ammonium nitrate and arrests including Dr Muzammil Ganaie.
