‘Deadliest Catch’ Star Sig Hansen Responds to Retirement Rumors Amid Health Issues
The 60-year-old captain said he wants to keep fishing despite doctors urging him to quit smoking and cut back on caffeine.
Sig Hansen, the 60-year-old captain of the F/V Northwestern, told People magazine he is not retiring despite medical advice to consider stepping down following a health crisis last year.
During the Season 21 finale last October, viewers watched Hansen collapse aboard the Northwestern, prompting doctors to urge him to quit smoking and consider retirement after suffering two previous heart attacks.
Hansen wants his daughter, Captain Mandy Hansen, to eventually assume a larger role, while son-in-law Clark Pederson has been stepping up as a capable crew member on the vessel.
Addressing retirement speculation directly, Hansen told People the rumors fuel his determination, saying "the more I hear that, the more I kind of want to rebel and not do that."
Even if he eventually steps down, Hansen admitted he could never fully walk away because his mind remains constantly active, tracking weather and fishing conditions from the sea.
