Rotterdam port explosion causes one death, police say
Six ambulances, a trauma helicopter and fire crews responded as police said multiple people were taken to hospital after the blast.
On Thursday, an explosion at a facility on the Moezelweg in Europoort killed one person and injured several others, Dutch police confirmed.
Rijnmond reported that a hired maintenance crew was working on pipelines at the site when the blast occurred, with visible damage to a storage tank suggesting a failure during disconnection.
Emergency services dispatched six ambulances, a trauma helicopter, and fire crews to the Rotterdam site, where multiple injured individuals were transported to hospital.
Earlier on Thursday, a power cut shut down the Esso refinery on the Botlekweg, causing flames and smoke; the Rotterdam-Rijnmond safety authority has not established a connection between the incidents.
Police have provided no further information regarding the cause of the explosion at this stage, while the investigation into the Port of Rotterdam incident continues.
