de Wolski wins Beargrease 120
Sean deWolski finished about one hour ahead of second place in his first Beargrease 120, using it to prepare for upcoming sled dog races, organizers said.
- On Monday, Jan. 26, 2026, Sean deWolski, Beargrease 120 winner and musher from Fairbanks, Alaska, won at the Trestle Inn north of Finland and steered his sled toward his trailer after finishing.
- A first-time participant, Sean deWolski had wanted to run for years but missed earlier tries after the 2024 cancellation and last year's delay caused by low snow; the Beargrease mid-distance race is considered the most prestigious in the lower 48.
- DeWolski built a 40-minute lead leaving the second checkpoint and finished about an hour and three minutes ahead of Joanna Oberg, of Grand Marais.
- After the finish, deWolski and handler Jake Witkop drank celebratory beers inside his trailer while his dogs mingled, and Witkop said he’s glad to see deWolski win and justify the trip from Fairbanks.
- Specializing in six-to-eight-dog mid-distance races, deWolski raced with eight race dogs and three retired canines after crossing about 4:45 a.m. in temperatures around minus 15.
