Swimmer Koen de Groot has won a silver medal in the 50-meter breaststroke at the European Swimming Championships. The 22-year-old from Limburg clocked 26.62 and improved his own Dutch record by six hundredths of a second. Marrit Steenbergen took silver in the 100-meter backstroke.
“You could certainly say that,” grinned Koen de Groot on Saturday evening after being asked whether the 50-meter breaststroke had become an Olympic event just in time. The 22-year-old breaststroke specialist surprised everyone with a silver medal at the European Long Course Championships in Paris. “Wow, that feels really good.”
