- On Friday, White House border czar Tom Homan clarified that local law enforcement officers in the District of Columbia are not expected to perform ICE duties during the Trump administration’s temporary federalization of the Metropolitan Police Department.
- Amid what he described as a violent crime surge, Trump earlier this week sidelined the district’s home rule to initiate a federal takeover of the MPD, sending in National Guard and federal law enforcement.
- According to an executive order issued Thursday, MPD officers can share information on noncustodial encounters, transport federal agents, and report undocumented individuals with no charges to ICE.
- Amid fears of ICE involvement, civil society groups cautioned the move could deter crime reporting, as CASA spokeswoman Jossie Flor Sapunar warned residents may be too scared to report crimes.
