Dates confirmed for new driving test booking rules
From May 12, only learner drivers can book or change tests, and from June 9, location limits apply; changes follow 100,000+ responses to a DVSA consultation.
- The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency announced major driving test booking changes starting March 31, 2026, when learners can make only 2 changes instead of 6, with further restrictions arriving May 12, 2026.
- Public feedback from more than 100,000 responses to a 2025 consultation showed 70.7 per cent of participants supported restricting bookings to learner drivers only, and 42.5 per cent backed limits on appointment changes to prevent bot exploitation.
- From June 9, 2026, learners can move tests only to the 3 nearest centres to deter misuse; the agency clarified that standard fees remain £62 on weekdays and £75 for evenings and weekends.
- Roads and Buses Minister Simon Lightwood said, "Learners deserve clear, honest access to tests," while DVSA chief executive Beverley Warmington noted the changes help stop exploitation by third-party services.
- Driving instructors can continue offering advice and support throughout the booking process, as these measures aim to create a level playing field and ensure tests go to those who need them most.
