'Frothy,' cosmic tornado captured in new images from NASA's Webb telescope

  • NASA's James Webb Space Telescope captured high-resolution images of Herbig-Haro 49/50, an outflow from a forming star, in near- and mid-infrared light.
  • The outflow features, in reddish-orange, offer insights into star formation and how jets affect surrounding environments.
  • Herbig-Haro 49/50 extends for light years, as noted by NASA, and is located in the Chamaeleon I Cloud complex, one of the nearest areas of star formation to our Sun.
  • This region was previously observed by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope in 2006.
