Dane County eyes 18-month moratorium on data centers
County planners would use the pause to study economic, water and energy impacts and draft zoning rules before more proposals move ahead.
- On June 4, the Dane County Board will vote on an 18-month moratorium on hyperscale data centers, suspending new zoning permits and applications to allow comprehensive planning.
- Dane County Board Chair Patrick Miles introduced the resolution to allow planners to "fully explore, analyze, and research" the economic, environmental, and infrastructure impacts of data centers.
- Wisconsin's Legislative Audit Bureau reports the state will forego $1.5 billion in sales tax for four data center projects, including Microsoft's $20.6 billion investment and Meta's $1 billion facility.
- Manitowoc County recently enacted a similar moratorium, while a 2016 state law signed by former Gov. Scott Walker allows towns to "opt out" of county zoning rules.
- If approved, the moratorium gives officials until December 2027 to develop reasonable zoning regulations and integrate data center management into the county's comprehensive plan.
