Dana White explains why UFC booked Carlos Prates vs. Michael Morales for interim title
On Saturday, the UFC announced Carlos Prates will face Michael Morales for the interim welterweight title at UFC 336 on January 30, 2027, in Toronto, Canada, at Scotiabank Arena.
Champion Islam Makhachev is unavailable to defend his title due to injury, prompting the interim bout. Commentator Jon Anik noted his next defense is delayed until between May and July because of Ramadan in February.
Prates most recently defeated former champion Jack Della Maddalena in May, while Morales, 27, enters undefeated at 19-0 with five knockout wins in the UFC.
In the co-main event, Joshua Van will defend his flyweight title against Manel Kape at Scotiabank Arena on the same January 30 card.
The winner of the interim welterweight bout will face Makhachev later in 2027 to unify the division title once the champion recovers from injury.
