What to Expect From Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs with Incoming 'Bell Cow' Workload
Dan Campbell said Gibbs will be the Lions' bell cow after David Montgomery was traded, and the running back saw 243 carries last season.
On Thursday, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed that Jahmyr Gibbs will be the team's "bell cow" running back for 2026, emphasizing the offense will rely heavily on him as the primary focal point.
The team facilitated this shift by trading David Montgomery to the Houston Texans this offseason, ending the backfield duo's tenure and clearing the path for Gibbs to operate without previous workload splits.
Gibbs' usage climbed steadily over his first two years, reaching up to 67% of snaps last season, and he recorded 243 carries in 2025 as the Lions increased his offensive involvement.
Although Detroit signed Isiah Pacheco to provide depth, the team does not intend to replicate the previous backfield split, with Pacheco expected to serve in a supporting role rather than compete for primary carries.
Campbell plans to utilize Gibbs' versatility in both run and pass schemes throughout 2026, marking a significant shift in the Lions' offensive identity as the team builds around his skill set.
