Amber Guyger, ex-Dallas police officer convicted of murder, is released on parole
The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles cited her prison record and program completion as reasons for the early release, officials said.
Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was released on parole Friday after serving seven years of her 10-year prison sentence at the Christina Melton Crain Unit in Gatesville, Texas.
Guyger shot Jean in 2018 after mistakenly entering his apartment at the South Side Flats, believing it was her own; a 2019 jury convicted her of murder, rejecting her self-defense claims.
The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles approved the release, citing Guyger's "satisfactory institutional adjustment" and program participation; she faces strict supervision until 2029, including a ban on living in Dallas County.
Attorney Lee Merritt criticized the decision, writing, "Releasing Ms. Guyger after seven years makes that loss feel even smaller in the eyes of the system." The Jean family requested privacy.
Jean's legacy endures through the renaming of Botham Jean Boulevard and passage of Bo's Law mandating police body cameras, while Guyger, now 38, will live and work outside Dallas County under parole supervision.
