Fire rips through an Ohio motel, killing 3 who were trapped in a room
Three people died after firefighters made several rescue attempts, and investigators are still working to determine how the blaze started.
Early Wednesday, a five-alarm fire broke out at the Econo Lodge in Wooster Township, Ohio, killing three people. Wooster Township Fire Chief Dallas Terrell confirmed the fatalities after flames destroyed a detached section of the hotel.
Responding crews arrived at 1:30 a.m. to find heavy flames through the roof, prompting multiple rescue attempts. 911 callers reported occupants trapped in room 135, though efforts remained unsuccessful.
The Wayne County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as Hiteshkumar Suthar, Hinaben Suthar, and Isha Suthar. During rescue attempts, one firefighter sustained minor burns but returned to duty after treatment.
Investigators from the State Fire Marshal and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are examining the fire's origin. Sheriff Thomas Ballinger stated the blaze began in the building's southwest corner.
Autopsies are underway at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office following the victims' transfer. Officials continue processing the scene near Lincoln Way East to determine the incident's cause.
