Cyclone Arnab: Odisha announces evacuation 48,000 in eight districts
Officials said schools were closed and 48 units of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force were deployed as heavy rain and strong winds approached.
- On Tuesday, the Odisha government ordered the evacuation of at least 48,000 people from low-lying and landslide-prone areas as very severe cyclonic storm Arnab approached the Andhra Pradesh coast, with landfall expected by Wednesday forenoon.
- The India Meteorological Department reported the storm moved west at 22 kmph over six hours, positioning it 260 km southeast of Visakhapatnam on Tuesday, before turning northwestwards toward the coast near Yanam.
- Special Relief Commissioner Rajesh Pravakar Patil deployed 294 rescue teams—nine NDRF, 60 SDRF, and 225 fire services personnel—while officials prepared 135 permanent cyclone shelters and nearly 1,600 temporary centers to accommodate evacuees.
- Authorities will shift at least 11,000 residents each from Gajapati and Nabarangpur districts, while schools across eight districts remain closed through Wednesday and the IMD issued orange warnings for heavy rainfall of 12-20 cm in vulnerable southern zones.
- Major ports including Paradip, Dhamra, and Gopalpur have stepped up preparedness as the storm brings sustained wind speeds of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph, while officials warned heavy rain in upper Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand catchments could trigger flash floods across western Odisha.
