Cyber attacks affect UK meat processing industry, top security official says

AIMS said the affected members lost no meat, while the NCSC worked through the night to alert firms with exposed systems.

  • On Monday, supermarkets in Ireland, Sweden, Estonia, and Belgium suffered an overnight cyber attack that spiked refrigeration temperatures, spoiling fresh and frozen food estimated worth millions of euros.
  • Attackers exploited known vulnerabilities in remote refrigeration management software that cyber-security researchers had identified months prior, compromising systems used to control cold storage units remotely.
  • Some of the more than 300 members of the British Association of Independent Meat Suppliers became what AIMS called "collateral" in the hacks, with units reaching 100C though no produce was lost.
  • National Cyber Security Centre officials warned UK organizations of potential risks on Tuesday, though chief executive Richard Horne said it remains "too early to say" who launched the hacks.
  • Horne warned that "technology base we rely on as a society has not been invested on to the extent it needs to be," urging businesses to secure internet-connected systems against evolving threats.
