Cursor makes its biggest India push yet ahead of SpaceX acquisition with localized pricing
Cursor Start offers higher usage limits and excludes frontier models as the company targets India’s large developer base and adds local hires.
- On Monday, the AI coding startup Cursor introduced Cursor Start, a subscription plan priced at 649 rupees—about $7—exclusively for India, marking its first localized pricing strategy.
- India now stands as Cursor's third-largest global market with the highest concentration of power users, prompting Simon Green, Cursor's head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, to tell TechCrunch the company aims to "right-size the commercial model" there.
- Unlike the $20-a-month Pro subscription, the plan excludes frontier AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic, relying instead on Cursor's in-house Composer 2.5 and Grok 4.5 systems to remain sustainable.
- Alongside localized pricing, Cursor is hiring sales, support, and government affairs staff across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai to deepen its operational footprint in the country.
- Following the recent $60 billion acquisition by Elon Musk-founded SpaceX, Cursor will operate independently until the deal closes, with Green noting that Starlink's existing presence in India could help the company scale faster.
