Almost 10 Years Later, Man Charged in Cattle Theft Near Mandan
GRAFTON, NORTHERN NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, JUN 26 – The accused allegedly used false vet documents and a third-party buyer to steal over 100 Wagyu cattle and genetics worth $100,000, facing 20 charges including animal cruelty.
A 34-year-old man was taken into custody in Grafton in 2024 and faces over 20 charges, including theft of Wagyu cattle, stealing semen and embryos, as well as aggravated animal cruelty.
Charges have been laid after an extensive year of inquiries into allegations of fraud and the theft of genetics at a high-end Wagyu cattle farm in Grafton, with authorities accusing the suspect of dishonest cattle transactions and falsifying veterinary records.
Police executed seven search warrants, mustered over 500 cattle, and found stolen cattle and a liquid nitrogen tank worth $100,000 containing semen linked to the alleged thefts.
The accused is alleged to have covertly purchased 114 cattle including 45 full-blood Wagyu at reduced prices, gaining nearly $100,000 in financial advantage, while a 48-year-old vet was charged with aggravated animal cruelty after two cows died in his care.
These cases highlight that cattle rustling and related crimes continue today amid challenges like declining livestock inspectors and ongoing community tensions in rural areas.
