Yellow Line Train Derails Near Howard Terminal, Disrupting Service on 3 CTA Lines
About 80 passengers were evacuated and no injuries were reported as CTA crews investigated the derailment and worked to restore service.
On Thursday evening, a Chicago Transit Authority Yellow Line train derailed near Howard Station in Rogers Park, forcing the temporary suspension of Red, Yellow, and Purple line services.
Chicago Fire Department District Chief Michael Davita led an emergency response involving about 50 firefighters, who successfully evacuated approximately 80 passengers from the derailed train with no injuries reported.
Stuck at Jarvis station for 90 minutes, impacted commuter Jonathan Eig described the experience, saying, "They came and opened the windows because there was no air conditioning."
To assist affected riders, the CTA provided shuttle buses between Howard and Thorndale, though service on the Yellow and Purple lines remained suspended as crews worked to resume operations.
Two and a half years ago, a similar Yellow Line crash caused an estimated $8.7 million in damages and left the train line closed for seven weeks.
