Researchers have more than halved the resource calculation required for the key step of a potential quantum attack on Bitcoin and Ethereum, compared to Google's March benchmark. The new circuit requires fewer logical qubits and Toffoli operations in this step. However, no machine can crack Bitcoin or Ethereum today, and according to the authors, the real urgency stems from the fact that a quantum-resistant transition will take years.
