Croatia blocks new Israeli ambassador over government policies
The standoff could leave Nissan Amdur serving as charge d’affaires, while Israel and Croatia work to resolve the ambassador’s status, officials said.
On Monday, the Office of the President of the Republic of Croatia confirmed President Zoran Milanovic will not approve Nisan Amdor as Israel's new ambassador, citing "policies of the current Israeli government" for the rejection.
The president's office argued Israel broke an "unwritten rule" by announcing Amdor before receiving consent, leaving the appointment stalled for seven months since the government approved him in November 2025.
To bypass the impasse, Israel decided Amdor will arrive in Zagreb as chargé d'affaires, a role requiring no presidential approval, marking the first time in Croatian history a president has rejected an ambassador.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar previously labeled Milanovic's rhetoric "unacceptable" and "hate-filled," while the president has harshly criticized Israel's military actions in Gaza, reflecting escalating tensions between the nations.
Israel's Foreign Ministry stated it is "working with the Croatian Foreign Ministry" to resolve the ambassador's status, though the dispute reflects a deeper internal divide between Croatia's president and right-wing government.
