Croatia outmuscle Ghana to take second place in Group L as England beat Panama
On Saturday, Croatia defeated Ghana 2-1 at Philadelphia Stadium, securing second place in Group L and advancing to the World Cup knockout stage. Nikola Vlasic's 83rd-minute header clinched the victory.
Petar Sucic opened the scoring for Croatia with a 31st-minute strike, but Derrick Luckassen equalized for Ghana in the 76th minute on his international debut. Both teams entered the match in strong qualifying positions.
Luka Modric, at 40 years old, became the oldest player in World Cup history to record an assist, setting up Vlasic's winner. The goal arrived 10 minutes after Luckassen's equalizer, with VAR review consuming half that time.
Croatia advances to face Portugal on July 2 in Toronto, while Ghana qualifies as a third-placed team to play Colombia on July 3 in Kansas City. Both sides progress to the World Cup knockout rounds.
England topped Group L after overcoming Panama 2-0, a result that confirmed Scotland's elimination from the tournament. Both Croatia and Ghana now prepare for the last 32 with qualification secured.
