IIT Bombay Student Suicide: Crime Branch Tracks Final Movements Through CCTV
Investigators are piecing together his movements after CCTV showed him in the exam hall and hostel before his death, police said.
- The Mumbai Police Crime Branch is analyzing CCTV footage from the examination hall, campus, and hostel to reconstruct the final movements of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode before he died on September 18.
- Wakode, 22, died Friday evening hours after a professor questioned him about alleged "academic malpractice" involving a mobile phone and ChatGPT during an examination.
- CCTV captured him entering his hostel room at approximately 1:25 PM, with footage showing "After leaving the examination hall, Sahil moved across the campus. He reached his hostel room at approximately 1:25 PM. He did not step out of the room thereafter," a Crime Branch official said.
- Following a complaint from Wakode's parents, Powai Police registered an FIR on Saturday under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act, alleging caste-based harassment.
- The Crime Branch is likely to summon Professor Suryanarayana Doolla for questioning as investigators cross-reference camera feeds to map exact movements, while security remains stepped up at the campus amid ongoing tensions.
