Cricket Controversy: The Timed-Out Dismissal Debate
Cricket Association of Nepal says the dismissal was legal but fell short of the sport’s spirit after Bhutan lost 62-8 while chasing 114.
On Thursday, the Cricket Association of Nepal apologized after its players appealed for a 'timed out' dismissal during the Asian Cricket Council Women's Premier Cup T20 match in Malaysia.
The controversy began when Nepal dismissed Bhutan opener Ngawang Choden on the first ball, leaving incoming batter Ritshi Choden unable to reach the crease within the ICC-mandated two minutes.
Nepal won the match after limiting Bhutan to 8-62 from their 20 overs, but the national board remained unimpressed with the team's actions during the contest.
Issuing a formal apology, CAN stated the dismissal was within the Laws of Cricket but acknowledged the incident fell short of sportsmanship standards the association strives to uphold.
This rule has faced scrutiny since Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews became the first player 'timed out' during the World Cup, highlighting ongoing debate between the Laws of Cricket and the spirit of the game.
