Virginia removes three Confederate memorials
Lawmakers funded the removals after a bill to target Confederate iconography died in the General Assembly.
- On Friday, the Commonwealth began removing three Confederate statues from Capitol Square in Richmond, honoring Confederate General Thomas Stonewall Jackson, Governor William Extra Billy Smith, and Confederate Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire.
- The Virginia General Assembly ordered the removal during its 2026 session, following legislation introduced earlier this year by Democratic State Sen. Adam Ebbin.
- Ebbin said the move reflects who the Commonwealth chooses to venerate, while the United Daughters called the monuments tributes to valor and heritage.
- The Department of General Services will facilitate the transfer to the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, which plans to relocate the statues to battlefield sites within the Shenandoah Valley.
- Efforts to remove Confederate-linked monuments from Richmond began in 2018, according to Democratic State Sen. Mike Jones, who described the statues as symbols of ongoing historical debate.
