Crews battling large fire at scrapyard in Westport, Mass.
Health officials urged residents to shelter in place and close windows as air-quality testing continued.
On Monday, May 4, 2026, a massive fire erupted at Mid City Scrap on State Road in Westport, Massachusetts, forcing police to close Route 6 in both directions between Route 88 and Gifford Road.
Earlier on Monday, the Westport Fire Department warned of elevated fire potential, citing 'southwest winds gusting to 30 to 35 mph, relative humidity as low as 25 to 35 percent, and a lack of significant rainfall.'
Witness Doreen Frazier described flames 'probably 100 feet high,' while Austin Mello reported 'really dark smoke,' and Mid City Scrap confirmed all team members are safe and accounted for with no injuries.
Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for residents near Davis Road, instructing them to close windows and shut off air conditioning units as the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection conducts air quality sampling.
Firefighters from Massachusetts and Rhode Island continue battling the blaze with mutual aid crews remaining on scene after 11 p.m., while state agencies monitor the situation to ensure public safety.
