Statement on Missing ICIJ Journalist Micah Reddy
Press groups say Micah Reddy and Kooki Mahmoud have been missing since Saturday and urge Djibouti authorities to confirm their safety.
- On Saturday, South African journalist Micah Reddy and his local fixer Kooki Mahmoud went missing in Djibouti. The CPJ urged authorities to immediately clarify their whereabouts and ensure their safety.
- Angela Quintal, Africa Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, expressed deep concern regarding the pair's status. Reddy holds degrees from Oxford University and Wits University and previously coordinated media freedom at the Right2Know Campaign.
- Known for fearless reporting, Reddy previously exposed mismanagement at NUMSA and the business dealings of Zunaid Moti. He recently co-authored a book with Pauli Wyk exposing Julius Malema's financial dealings.
- His extensive international journalism career includes serving as managing editor of the Yemen Times in Sana. Reddy also worked as an editor in Egypt and reported from Ukraine.
- Sam Sole, managing partner of amaBhungane, emphasized that Reddy's current investigation was not focused on the "Republic of Djibouti or its government." Sole described the journalist as a "gifted and fearless" reporter.
