B.C. to rename Site C dam after deceased premier John Horgan
The 83-kilometre reservoir will keep its Indigenous name as the province says the renaming honors Horgan’s leadership on a $16 billion project.
On Thursday, Premier David Eby announced the Site C dam on the Peace River will be renamed the John Horgan Dam and Generating Station, honoring the late former premier's leadership and commitment to British Columbia.
Horgan, who once called the project a "$9-billion gamble," allowed construction to proceed in 2017 after determining the controversial dam was past the point of no return.
The 83-kilometre reservoir behind the $16-billion dam is named Nūchí nege, or "dreamer lake," in the Dane-Zaa language, chosen by 13 affected First Nations through discussions beginning in 2023.
Energy Minister Adrian Dix described the naming as a tribute to Horgan's "difficult decision" to complete the project, noting the late premier would have reacted with interest and humor.
Construction began in 2015, and the project became fully operational last year with all six generating units entering service, marking the final milestone following Horgan's death at age 65 in 2024.
