- Before the drive, Elections Alberta had approved the referendum question before Christmas but barred signature collection until the proponent finalised details, including hiring a chief financial officer.
- The approved question asks, `Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?`, and Elections Alberta described the launch as firing the starter's pistol on the race to collect signatures for a referendum on the province quitting Canada.
- The proponent was cleared to begin collecting signatures and may now proceed to qualify the referendum, while Mitch Sylvestre could not be immediately reached for comment as The Canadian Press first published the report Jan. 2, 2026.
- Sylvestre has argued the referendum is needed because of federal government restrictions on oil development and dim hopes for electoral change in Ottawa.
