Court slashes $50M judgment against Infowars’ Alex Jones over falsely calling school shooting a hoax
A Texas court reduced a $50 million judgment against Infowars founder Alex Jones to $1.5 million, addressing his false claims that the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax.
Plaintiffs Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis sued Jones after he falsely claimed the Newtown, Connecticut massacre, which killed their 6-year-old son Jesse Lewis, was a government-staged hoax.
The Texas Third Court unanimously ruled that Heslin and Lewis failed to show evidence of harassment exceeding the state's $750,000 damage cap, validating defense attorney Andino Reynal's post-trial prediction.
A separate $1.4 billion judgment against Jones in Connecticut remains unaffected by this ruling, while Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems, continue navigating bankruptcy proceedings.
Although this specific award was reduced, the 2022 case established a foundational legal precedent holding Jones liable for his massacre claims, with bankruptcy proceedings determining asset distribution.
