Court Rejects Sadiya Farouq’s Bid to Vacate Arrest Warrant in Alleged $1.3m Fraud Case
Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie said the former minister gave no valid reason for missing her arraignment and kept the bench warrant in place.
- On Monday, the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo, Abuja, dismissed an application by former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Sadiya Umar-Farouq seeking to set aside a bench warrant of arrest issued against her.
- The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is prosecuting Umar-Farouq alongside Bashir Nura Alkali and Sani Nafiu Mohammed for allegedly diverting about $1.3 million and N746,574,303 during her tenure under President Muhhamdu Bugari.
- Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie rejected her medical report, noting the six-to-eight-week treatment period in Egypt expired on June 9, 2026, and described her claims as "bogus excuses" for failing to appear.
- Following the ruling, prosecution counsel Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, urged the court to enforce an undertaking by lead defense counsel A.A. Ibrahim to produce the defendant, with proceedings adjourned until July 2, 2026.
- The court emphasized that Umar-Farouq willfully failed to appear in a criminal proceeding without valid reason, and the law empowers the judiciary to issue a warrant of arrest for alleged diversion of public funds.
