Court grants Malami, son N200m bail in terrorism financing, firearms possession trial
- On Friday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission re-arraigned Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, his wife Asabe Bashir and son Abdulaziz on money laundering offences at the Federal High Court in Abuja before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.
- After Justice Obiora Egwuatu withdrew on Feb. 12, the case was reassigned following an earlier vacation‑period assignment to Justice Emeka Nwite; the defendants were arraigned on Dec. 30, 2025, and admitted to ₦25 million bail each on Jan. 7.
- The defendants pleaded not guilty to the 16 counts, and Jibrin Okutepa, SAN, applied for their pleas to be taken, noting all earnings were paid in US dollars.
- Justice Abdulmalik granted an EFCC request to correct Counts 11 and 12 to N325 million and N120 million after the defence did not oppose the application.
- Malami, who served as attorney general and justice minister from 2015 to 2023, faces terrorism-related allegations including abetting terrorism financing amid Nigeria's insurgency that killed over 40,000 and displaced nearly two million.
