Princes Street to Remain Closed Into Edinburgh’s Festival Season After Fire
Campaigners say emergency bus lanes and loading restrictions are needed as around 50 routes are diverted and tram service is limited.
On Tuesday, Edinburgh City Council confirmed that Princes Street will remain closed between South Charlotte Street and Frederick Street "into August" following a major fire at the former Debenhams store on July 9.
Fire crews responded to the B-listed structure in the early hours of July 9 and remained on scene until Friday; the City of Edinburgh Council said "painstaking" work is now ongoing to make the building safe.
Around 50 bus routes have been rerouted to George Street and Queen Street, while trams terminate at Shandwick Place or the West End. Willie Hamilton of Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams told the BBC the situation was "fluid."
The Edinburgh Bus Users Group published an open letter calling for emergency bus priority measures on George Street, warning that without intervention the area faces "total gridlock."
Council Leader Jane Meagher said she is "acutely aware" that disruption is expected during the upcoming festival season, and the council is coordinating with event organisers to minimize impact on visitors.
