Cotswolds Iron Age Roman settlement discovered after rare swords found
NEAR WILLERSEY, COTSWOLDS, GLOUCESTERSHIRE, ENGLAND, JUL 4 – Excavations revealed Iron Age and Roman settlement remains including a possible villa, prompted by the rare find of two Roman cavalry swords donated to Corinium Museum.
- Metal detectorist Glenn Manning discovered two iron Roman cavalry swords during a March 2023 rally near Willersey; these artifacts have since been given to the Corinium Museum, where they will be exhibited to the public starting August 2.
- The swords' discovery triggered archaeological excavations earlier this year that uncovered an Iron Age Roman settlement with structures spanning several centuries near Willersey.
- Excavations uncovered a large rectangular enclosure, several Iron Age ring ditches—estimated to be three or four in number—and Roman limestone structures that may represent a winged villa; additionally, scabbard fragments were identified on the swords.
- Manning described the discovery of two swords at a single location as remarkable, while senior archaeologist Ian Barnes highlighted that the dig sheds important light on how settlements evolved in Gloucestershire from the Early Iron Age to the Roman era.
- Historic England may recommend protecting the site as a scheduled monument, and the findings enhance understanding of local life during the mid to late Roman era and the Roman Conquest period.
