Cornell to Allow State Police to Handle Sexual Assault Investigations - The Ithaca Voice
The change follows backlash over Cornell’s handling of a reported assault and lets survivors pick state police or campus and local investigators.
- On Thursday, Cornell University and the New York State Police signed an agreement allowing sexual assault survivors to choose which agency will lead their criminal investigations, effective immediately.
- The agreement follows intense backlash over Cornell's handling of an alleged October 2024 sexual assault, where a civil lawsuit by Jane Doe accused Cornell Police of mishandling her report to prosecutors.
- Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said prosecutors received only a summary of Jane Doe's statement, omitting her transcript where she asserted, "I can say with 100% confidence I was raped."
- Survivors can also choose the Ithaca Police Department or the Tompkins County Sheriff to conduct investigations, while state police investigations remain independent from Cornell oversight.
- About 135 members of the Faculty Senate are voting on a no-confidence resolution in university leadership, with voting continuing until November 6.
