Cornell responds to Jane Doe’s letter saying she felt ‘unsupported’ by university president
Cornell says the student’s account of Kotlikoff’s remarks is incorrect as faculty members consider a no-confidence resolution over his leadership.
Jane Doe sent a letter to Cornell's Faculty Senate earlier this month, stating she felt "unsupported and disbelieved" by Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff after reporting her alleged 2024 sexual assault.
The letter emerged as faculty members weigh a no-confidence vote in Kotlikoff's administration, following a civil lawsuit Doe filed last month against the university and the Chi Phi fraternity.
Doe's letter recounts a "second-hand account" of a conversation where Kotlikoff allegedly asked why the assault wasn't reported sooner, which she interpreted as doubting her story's veracity.
Cornell officials disputed the letter's characterization, stating the remark was directed at bystanders who ignored an anonymous tip line, not at Doe, according to a documented first-hand account.
Dean Chris Schaffer confirmed he received the letter on October 14 and forwarded it to an investigatory team led by former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates.
