Don't Cut Capacity without Talks: Global Airline Body on Mumbai Airport Operator's Navi Mumbai Shift Plan
Airlines opposed the plan to cut 265 weekly international departure slots, and the ministry asked stakeholders to agree on a transition plan.
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Civil Aviation intervened to pause Adani Airports Holdings Limited's plan to cut 33% of international departure slots at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport following airline opposition.
Adani Airports had proposed cutting 265 of 770 weekly international slots from October 25 to accommodate domestic operations shifting from Terminal 1 during its phased redevelopment.
Opposing the aggressive timeline, carriers including IndiGo and Air India argued the disruption would affect 46 airlines, with IndiGo facing 74 slot cuts and Air India 33.
Union Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha directed AAHL to draft an 'agreeable' transition plan, with stakeholder meetings scheduled for October 13 and a final deadline of October 20.
This broader operational reshuffle reflects AAHL's plans to shift traffic to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is equipped to handle 5 million international passengers annually.
